General Standard Schnauzer Information
Standard schnauzers are very intelligent and can be strong willed. You must be prepared to train your new puppy from the beginning. Puppy kindergarten classes, regular obedience classes, and advanced obedience classes is the best approach. It takes a person who is seasoned in dogs who has the time to train and socialize the puppy for two years until mature. As puppies they can be destructive (chewing & digging) and will require crate training. They play very rough and do not always get along with smaller dogs. We have had a couple of major tiffs between our standards and minis. Once they reach adulthood and have been trained properly you will have the most wonderful family member and protector.
The Standard Schnauzer is not the breed for those who want a slow, placid dog or one that can be "fed and forgotten," for they insist on being part of the family activities and develop best when treated in this manner.
They are outstanding companions known for their devotion and love of their family and are not "one person dogs" but instead become a true family member. SS are particularly good with older children, being playful and tolerant. At the same time, they are alert to any intruder who might threaten their home & family. If not trained & socialized properly they can become territorial of their property and people
A Standard Schnauzer is a medium-sized working breed in the schnauzer/pinscher canine family. It is not a terrier and was not developed to "go to ground." SS are characterized by a robust, square, athletic build, a dense wiry, harsh coat of black or pepper and salt and an energetic, intelligent temperament. Standard Schnauzers are sociable, alert, affectionate, protective and reliable in nature, with a good sense of humor which you must share with them. They are generally healthy, sturdy and long-lived with few hereditary illnesses.
SSCA breeders check their stock for hip dysplasia, and should also screen for eye defects and other hereditary problems like DCM. The breed is of true medium size, with males between 18-20" high at the shoulder, weighing 40- 50 lbs, while females are between 17-19" high, weighing 30-40 pounds They require professional grooming several times a year and shed little as long as they are kept groomed.
My standard puppies are champion sired from top quality conformation/obedience lines and come with a genetic health guarantee. Parents have great temperaments and have had hips OFA'd, eyes CERF'd and DNA tested for DCM.
I'm very strict in my breeding program with my schnauzers getting eye exams by a veterinary ophthalmologist, vet check with complete blood profile including CBC, thyroid and urinalysis before breeding takes place. I breed no schnauzers with health concerns or bad temperaments. All puppies are raised in the TV room next to the kitchen and are extensively socialized from birth to both humans and the other schnauzers. Pups are ready for their new homes at 8 and 12 weeks old and the following is included in purchase price; tail docked, dew claws removed, microchip vet checked, wormed & stool checked, blood profiles to make sure all organs are working properly, vaccinations up to date for age, started on heartworm preventative, a sales agreement with genetic health guarantee and a puppy pack to take home which includes food, toys, chewies, blanket and written information on raising your puppy. I also start housebreaking the puppies at 6 weeks old.
